Retro mini fridges cool or what?

It goes without saying that most of us love to fill our homes with ‘nice things’. We spend a great deal of time searching for furniture, fixtures, and fittings that will enhance our beloved dwelling places, to create a relaxing, comfortable space that reflects us, our personalities, our quirkiness, and our characters. And if there are two themes that recur time and again in the world of fashion and interior design, they are a desire for items that display features and designs from a bygone era, as well as miniature versions of familiar, everyday fixtures.

Nostalgia is a strange thing, often invoking feelings of times that we may not have actually experienced ourselves, without any of the negative associations or attachments. Likewise, the attraction to miniaturized things – items that can be described as bijou. This idea is mostly associated with houses or jewelry, but it captures the essence of the concept; that something can be appealing as well as practical, even though it is small. And when the two are joined, it can make for a winning combination.

Retro Mini Fridges

Refrigerators are eminently practical things, keeping food and drink cool and fresh. Yes, many of today’s modern fridges are stylish, some are extremely high-tech, but most are quite plain. There are exceptions, of course, though generally speaking, we select a model that suits our needs, and practicality and functionality often overrules aesthetics.

So, you have your large, family-sized fridge, stuffed with your weekly provisions. But what about something extra, a bit of fun? A place to store some treats, a few cold cans for those humid days in the height of summer’s blaze? What better way to add a touch of nostalgia in a miniature style than with a retro mini fridge? They come in a whole host of styles, colors, and shapes, each one displaying those evocative designs we recognize from tv shows, movies, and – dare I say – museums. Some of us will be old enough to remember these designs from the first time around, which is great – you get to enjoy them twice over!

Why a mini fridge?

Well, why not? It doesn’t have to be confined to the kitchen. It can be stood on a carpet – as long as it is kept level. It instantly adds a splash of color and quirkiness to a room. And when you fancy a refreshing drink or indulgent treat you can reach for it in seconds. Kids (of all ages) will adore them and are an ideal idea for a teens room.

Many a bedroom – and dorm room – is already blessed with a compact refrigerator, providing a handy source of refreshment as well as adding style and a sense of fun. And as long as you follow some common-sense guidelines there’s no reason why you should encounter any problems.

Some units have freezer compartments and some don’t, so be sure to select one to suit your specific needs. When choosing a retro mini fridge, remember that the capacity refers to the interior dimensions in terms of cubic feet. Some manufacturers helpfully include a guide as to how many cans or bottles of a particular size you can fit inside.

Be aware that some models a noisier than others so if you live in a small home like a trendy Quonset then you may want to check out the noise ratings. Again, you should make sure that the unit is level as this may help reduce the ‘shake’ that may be contributing to the noise level. Also, if it is placed on bare floorboards or laminate flooring the noise could seem louder, but foam pads beneath the feet will absorb most of the sound.

What about efficiency?

Most units will last for over ten years, but it is wise to seek a replacement no later than this. If you stand them on a carpet, make sure there is plenty of airflow around the unit and do not be tempted to store things on top.

At the moment, until modern technology is able to provide a better solution – mini fridges are not anywhere near as efficient as normal size ones in terms of energy use. To counter this, try to select one that has an Energy Star Rating and uses a lower amount of power.

Enhance your home with a retro mini fridge today. Why? Because they’re ‘cool’!
